about

“When I was 12, my mom’s brother played some blues guitar over in the
corner of the living room on my father’s prized ‘52 Martin O-18. I got that
funny feeling in my gut, that I would later learn is being turned on, and I had
to play it.” – Dave Tucker

-------------------------------------------------

When you meet Dave Tucker, it doesn’t take long to see that he’s the salt of
the earth. A carpenter by day, Dave is a hard-working man who tells it like
it is. “If I ain’t sweatin’ then I haven’t worked,” he says, “and if I haven’t
worked, how can I justify the pay?” His homegrown pragmatism is also what
so appropriately makes him an Americana singer/songwriter. Dave Tucker
now prepares to release his fourth studio album, In Kind, on December 18,
2012. “In Kind is my statement of bartering for what I need,” and that’s
exactly how this album, produced by recording artist and multi-platinum
songwriter Wendy Waldman, came to be.

“Carpentry has very tangibly shaped my world of music,” says Dave, “in that
it has provided my entry into the actual creation of my album.” Born and
raised in Union County, New Jersey, Dave Tucker moved to Los Angeles in
2008 on a barter deal. He had refinished the front porch of Linda Hoffman,
mother to producer, songwriter and recording engineer Rob Hoffman (Quincy
Jones, Christina Aguilera) in Atlantic Highlands, NJ. She sent him to live with
her son Rob in LA saying, “You’re going to record with my son, and if you
don’t, I’ll pay you for it and take it out of his inheritance!” Rob and Wendy
Waldman were friends, so it was only a matter of time before Dave met
Wendy, and began building for her, too.

Dave and Wendy’s relationship began with some light carpentry work. When
it came time to figuring out what Wendy would give him in return, Dave,
truthfully knowing very little of Wendy’s career except for her Grammy
award-winning song “Save The Best For Last,” asked for them to write
together. Dave then recorded his EP Inductive Reasoning with Rob Hoffman,
featuring two co-writes with Wendy. In the spring of 2011, after he had gone
back to New Jersey, Dave was called upon once again by Wendy, this time to
build her a new recording studio.

With a vision and only one floor plan, Dave Tucker built the Longhouse
II studio at Wendy Waldman’s house in the San Fernando Valley in five
months. Built with Americana and folk music in mind, the studio allows for
multiple musicians to record at once while maintaining acoustic separation.
Longhouse II now acts as the home of the acclaimed public radio show
FolkScene, which has been on air for more than 40 years, and now on KPFK.

In Dave’s true bartering fashion, his incredible carpentry art was exchanged
for an equally valuable record, recorded at Longhouse II in the summer of
2012. Taking on the roles of both producer and mentor, Wendy Waldman
helped Dave to blend the lines between music and carpentry. They asked,

“What part of a song is the foundation, the windows, the floor, and so on?”
Dave soon learned that just as the guy who does the dry wall isn’t the same
guy who puts in the windows, he had to trust Wendy’s production and Rob
Hoffman’s mixing.

The approach to planning Dave Tucker’s fourth, upcoming album In Kind
was similar to the way he built Wendy Waldman’s studio, which had no real
blueprints. “I love music and care about it deeply, but I don’t take it so
seriously,” says Dave. “I don’t need to spend three years fighting over how
a guitar riff sounds best on my album.” It’s that attitude that allowed for
In Kind to be recorded in under a week and still be rich with raw, integral
passion. The album features Dave Tucker (acoustic guitar, vocals), Phil
Hurley (lead guitar), Tom Fillman (drums/percussion), and Ted Russell Kamp
(upright and electric basses). It was engineered by Mike Sawitzke, mixed by
Rob Hoffman and mastered by Sangwook “Sunny” Nam at the Mastering Lab
in Ojai, CA.

In Kind guides the listener through traditional Americana, folk and roots
(“Mountain of a Man”), to pop rock (“Cocoa Butter Baby”) with a little country
swagger (“Slidin’ Backwards”), then throws curveballs with a reggae beat
(“Arctica”) and singer/songwriter ballad (“Simple Kind of Love”). The all-
encompassing, explorative nature of Dave Tucker makes sense though,
considering he grew up in an extremely religious and socially conservative
family, which, for most of his youth, kept him from discovering music outside
of Peter, Paul and Mary. At age 17, Dave seized his musical freedom with a
driver’s license and car radio.

Although on the surface Dave Tucker’s father was a corporate insurance
man who banned MTV at home and shorts in the summer, he was always
fully aware of great music. A 1964 college graduate and musician himself,
he was a part of the generation that mingled with artists like Pete Seeger,
Josh White and Bob Dylan when they would perform on campus. Dave fondly
notes his now 70-year-old father, who taught him a C chord, as his first
musical influence: “I can still remember my dad singing his version of Jesse
Colin Youngs’ ‘Black Eyed Susan,’ which he had inserted my mother’s name
and eye color into: ‘Hey, pretty little brown eyed Nelie.’”

Time has allowed for such magical moments as track six on In Kind, the
reggae-driven “Arctica,” to be written by Dave and the man who once kicked
him out of the house for having dreadlocks – his father. While Dave admits
that growing up he felt like his parents were being “Christian meanies,” he is
grateful for both his ear and the old soul he was forced to develop as a music
enthusiast and songwriter. A lover of poetry who learned how to look for
substance in music because he had to justify it to his parents, Dave Tucker
is a man who will always choose, “Let’s go dancing in the harvest moon”
over “I wanna make love.” After all, it’s always the innuendos that make you
sweat.
